For those who haven’t read it, Paul Finebaum’s got a new article up at al.com explaining why, beyond a shadow of a doubt, Mark Richt is on the hot seat, and that a new AD will only hurt his chances.
Now, I’m probably playing right into Paul’s hands by posting this article. We all know he’s a Bama-faithful prick who simply likes stirring the proverbial pot in order to increase views. And so if he gets a few more ad-dollars off of me linking to his site, then so be it. It’s opinions like his that absolutely drive me off the wall.
Finebaum compares the UGA program to other SEC programs after hiring a new AD. One of the comparisons that really struck a chord with me was when he mentioned Tennessee’s hire of Mike Hamilton in 2003 and how “apparently” that led to Fat Phil’s firing in 2008. I don’t see a direct correlation. Between 2003 and 2008, the Vols had two 5-7 seasons and a 9-4 season as well. Phil had had plenty of success prior to this stretch, but what it comes down to is how the fans reacted. I remember seeing pictures of “Fire Fulmer” written on rocks and on buildings leading up to his forced resignation. I remember Tennessee friends telling me how fed up they were with him and ready to try something new. To ONLY connect his firing to the hiring of a new AD is silly, and I’m sure the case was the same with the other schools he mentioned. When Auburn hired Jay Jacobs as AD in 2004, the Tigers had 9-4, 8-5, and 5-7 seasons leading up to when Tubs was let go in 2008. The firing of old Tubs was also incredibly political, but what it boils down to is how the fans react.
On that note… I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If Richt has a few more seasons WORSE than last year in the next few years, then he might be in danger. THEN. But looking at rosters and schedules, I just don’t see that happening. Richt has taken ALL necessary steps to bettering this program during this offseason. He has changed staff, changed mentalities, changed strategies, and just basically done a good job getting the Dawg Nation pumped about this season. I don’t think any of the Nation will change their opinion of him until they are forced to do so.
I have all the faith in the world in the Coach. and you should too. Don’t let terribly biased writers like Fine-bum change how you feel. And on that note, everybody needs to calm down about these recent arrests. Sure the Damon Evans pantiesgate was a terrible event. But as far as guys getting caught drinking (or withholding their middle name.)…. I mean come on, it’s college. Drinking happens. Yes, Dontavius Jackson should NOT have been behind the wheel, but in general, we all do(did) stupid stuff in college. We did. Richt’s taking every disciplinary action he needs to with these players, but it doesn’t mean that our program’s in shambles. Just take a deep breath. The only reason it’s all such a big deal is because there’s nothing else to report about. Just chillllllllllllll duuuuuddddddeeeeee….
Until next time, thanks for stopping by Bulldog Nation.
